Based in Raleigh, North Carolina, professional ice hockey team Carolina Hurricanes is the member of Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). Interestingly, Carolina Hurricanes is the only major sports teams in North Carolina in Raleigh while two other teams of the states NBA’s Charlotte Hornets and NFL’s Carolina Panthers are based in Charlotte. Eric Staal has been leading the team as a captain since 2010.

The team was founded in 1971 as the New England Whalers of the World Hockey Association (WHA). The team joined the NHL as a part of the NHL- WHA Merger in 1979.

Established in Boston in 1971 as the New England Whalers, the team began to play their home games. After playing for two years at Boston Arena and Boston Garden, the team had to face some difficulties in scheduling the games in Boston Arena so the team was moved to Hartford Connecticut.

In Hartford, the team played their first game at the Big E Coliseum in West Springfield. Due to limited marketability, the team was located in dividing line between New York City and Boston teams. The inability to negotiate a satisfactory construction and no availability of new arena made the owner Peter Karmanos to change the arena in Hartford. The team was moved from Harford to North Carolina and chose Research Triangle area and the New Entertainment and Sports Arena in Raleigh. For the first time, the word ‘Whalers’ eliminated from the name of the team. And the team was named the Carolina Hurricanes by Karmanos and still recognized by this name.

After going through the problems of arenas, the national waves by the team were made in 2002 playoffs. The team played with Washington Capitals and Montreal Canadiens. Playing with heavily forced Toronto Maple Leafs due to which the team reached to its first Stanley Cup finals.

The team exhibited its talent and appeared as one of surprises by NHL. The team shattered the old franchise records and passed the 50 win and 100 point plateaus. It proved to be the best season in the whole history of franchise. The team won Stanley Cup Championship which was the first professional major league sports title for any team from North Carolina. Stanley Cup Championship also made Hurricanes first NHL team to win Stanley Cup.

The franchise has won many trophies for their outstanding performances including Stanley Cup, Prince of Wales Trophy, Conn Smythe Trophy, Frank J. Selke Trophy, King Clancy Memorial Trophy, Lester Patrick Trophy and Calder Memorial Trophy.
