Colorado Avalanche

A brief history and introduction of the team:

The Colorado Avalanche is a professional National Hockey League (NHL) ice hockey team based in Denver, Colorado. They are currently a part of the Central Division of the National Hockey League. They are located in the Mountain Time Zone, due to which they are considered as the only team in the Central Division not in the Central time zone, which some find ironic.

Founded in 1972, the team was originally the Quebec Nordiques, while registered with the World Hockey Association (WHA). When the NHL and WHA merged the Quebec Nordiques joined the National Hockey League. After the 1995 season, the Nordiques were purchased by COMSAT. As COMSAT is based in Denver, the team was relocated and the name was changed to the Colorado Avalanche.

The Avalanche had a really good time when they started off in the NHL. They put on impressive shows and soon won a lot of trophies.

Past Achievements:

Stanley Cups
The Avalanche won the Stanley Cup twice, in 1996 and 2001. The win in 1996 made the Avalanche the first team in NHL history to win the Stanley Cup following relocation. In 2001, the Avalanche defeated the New Jersey Devils to claim their second and most recent Stanley Cup.

Conference Championships
The Avalanche won the Conference Championships twice, in 1996 and 2001. From 2001 to 2004 the team kept achieving top positions in the league, but they were unable to claim to claim another championship.

Presidents’ trophies
The Avalanche, twice, won the Presidents’ trophy, 1997 and 2001. In 1997, they won the trophy for finishing the season with a very good record, with 107 points to its name. In 2001, the team won the trophy again, but this time they had an even more impressive record with, 118 points to its name.

Division Championships
The Avalanche won nine Division championships, the most recent being won in 2003. The Avalanche hold the record of having the most consecutive Division championship wins. They have won nine consecutive titles, 1995 to 2003, which is an NHL record.

Team Today

The Avalanche is a great hockey team and it has definitely surprised many of its opponents. The team has not had much success lately, but their consistent point scoring show they are a force to be reckoned with and the future looks promising for this determined squad.

The home arena of the Avalanche is the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado. Other Denver professional sports teams, such as the Denver Nuggets also call the Pepsi Center home. The Pepsi Center boasts an impressive seating capacity of around 18,000. The arena is well constructed and fan accessible, with a good location and elevators and escalators throughout. Moreover, there is a huge screen in the arena, which helps give a good view of key events occurring within the game.

The team is currently being coached by Patrick Roy who is pretty good at his job, and the current manager is Greg Sherman. Some of the famous players in the Avalanche include Tyson Barrie and Brad Malone.
