Houston based Basketball team is famous for being played in the Southwest Division of the Western Conference in the National Basketball Association (NBA). San Diego is the place where the Houston Rockets were founded in 1967. The Rockets have set many records and achieved wide amount of honors and winnings. History

Robert Breitbard bought the Rockets for US$1.75 million. As an expansion team for the season of NBA in 1967-1968, Rockets entered in the NBA. At that time, Atlas Missile and booster rocket program was in process and their local development led the San Diego Franchise to be known by a nickname ‘Rockets’.

Jack McMhon became the coach of the Rockets and Pat Riley became the first draft pick of the team in 1967. The team faced some bad luck in the inaugural season. The Rockets set the record for losing 67 games in a season.

The Rockets have won divisions and conferences for four times. The team has also won back to back championships of NBA in 1994 and 1995. The best player of the team is Hakeem Olajuwon who has been the part of the team for seventeen years. He was the most valuable player of NBA in both the championships seasons. Besides this, he is also career leader in nine categories for the franchise.

In 1993, the ownership of the Rockets was transferred to Leslie Alexander who purchased the team for $85 million. Under his ownership, MVP and Defensive Player of The Year Olajuwon led the team towards several winnings but the season 1997-1998 was hit by some disappointments and lost the series. In 2013, the Rockets achieved a home game record for scoring most points at the Toyota Center.

Arenas

In the initial years after the establishment of team, Rockets played in San Diego Games Arena. Then the team shifted to Houston where it did not have any home Arena that’s why in the beginning they played at different venues. The popular venues in Houston include AstroHall, Astrodome, University of Houston’s Hofheinz Pavilion and Sam Houston Coliseum. To see increase in fan base, the team also visited other cities such as Waco, San Antonio, San Diego and Albuquerque. The Summit was the new arena for Rockets in Houston in 1975 where they played home games for twenty years. Then the team changed the arena from The Summit to Toyota Center for the season 2003 to 2004.
