American professional hockey team was formed in 1997 when the state was granted NHL franchise. The team started to play in 2000 and is a member of the Central Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL).


The name of the team was selected from the names of groups of six finalists including Blue Ox, Northern Lights, White Bears, Wild, Freeze and Voyageurs. The name Wild was revealed in 1998 at Aldrich Arena with the song ‘Born to be Wild’.

After seven years of political squabbling, the state of Minnesota got NHL team following the Northstars move to Dallas. The wild coached by Jacques Lemaire and played their first game against Philadelphia Flyers and the game ended with 3-3 tie. The debut was made on the road losing to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.

It was the biggest game of the season was when stars came to town. More than 18,000 fans came to see the match at Xcel Energy Center as the team won the game with 6-0. The team made a trip to the Western Conference Finals with the air of optimism. Unfortunately before making their way to finals, the team swept by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.

The team made its first play-off appearance in 2003 and second play-off was made in 2007 but eliminated by the Stanley Cup Champion Ducks in opening round. 2007-8 Season was the golden period for the team as it broke several franchise records. It was the season when the team won the Northwest Division Title for the first time over the Calgary Flames. During the off season of the same year, many players were traded but the mainstream defensive system made by Jacques Lemaire prohibited number of top agents to enter in the team.

At the end of season 2009, the coach Jacques resigned and returned to coach the New Jersey Devils. This led to complete turnover in the team management staff and coaching. In the tenth season, the team got the new coach Todd Richards.


The ownership of Minnesota based team Minnesota Wild is in the hand of Minnesota Sports & Entertainment. In 2008, The NHL’s Board of Governor officially approved Leipold’s purchase of Minnesota Sports & Entertainment.
