New York Islanders

A brief history and introduction of the team:

The New York Islanders, formed in 1972, are a professional team that plays ice hockey. The team is based in New York and is a part of the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference, and a member of the National Hockey League (NHL). Their fan base largely commutes in to see the games from Long Island. The Islanders are one of three NHL teams who call New York home, sharing the city with the Devils and the Rangers; the Rangers being their home rivals. When the Islanders and the Rangers play each other, the match is typically called “Battle of New York”. The rivalry exists mainly, due to the geographical location of the two teams.

The Islanders have a total of eight members who have been inducted into the Hall of Fame. The most recent Hall of Famer is Pat LaFontaine, who was inducted in 2003.

1975 was a very surprising year for Islanders. The team was playing high in its glory and finished the season with 88 points which was a really good personal achievement as the team scored 32 more points when compared to previous season. In 1976, the Islanders scored 101 points which was the first time they had a 100 point season. It is important to note here that this was only their 4th season which makes this achievement even more impressive. The next three seasons also went on to be 100 point seasons for the Islanders.

Past Achievements:

Stanley Cups
The Islanders have won the Stanley Cup on four occasions. They won those four Cups consecutively from 1980 to 1983.

Conference Championships
The Islanders have claimed the Conference Championship six times. In 2013, they reached the quarter finals but failed to proceed ahead.

Division Championships
The Islanders have won six division championships. The team has been a dry run lately and has not won a single division title since 1988. 1974 to 1979 was a victorious period for the Islanders where they had four 100 point seasons and were also able to win two division titles during this period. In 2002, the Islanders came very close to winning the division title again, but they fell short by one point.

Team Today

The New York Islanders are a hardworking team. Although the success of the team remains in a specific period in the past, the team still works hard to win their games and puts on the best show for the fans.

The Islanders have made their home at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, since 1972. The team wishes to relocate to Barclays Center in 2015, when their current lease with the Coliseum expires. Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum has a capacity of 16,000 fans. The arena is not small at all; it is very roomy and accessible. It is also convenient to get around the place in search for food and other important items.

The team is currently being coached by Jack Capuano who is pretty good at his job, and the current manager is Garth Snow. Some of the famous Islanders players include Matt Martin and Thomas Hickey.
