Toronto Raptors

A Brief History and Introduction:

The Toronto Raptors, founded in 1995, are a Toronto Canada based professional basketball team. They are a member of the National Basketball Association and they play as a part of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference. They were founded simultaneously with the Vancouver Grizzlies. Both teams emerged as a consequence of the expansion of NBA into Canada. After six years, the Vancouver Grizzlies moved back to Memphis thus becoming the Memphis Grizzlies which made the Raptors as a sole Canadian NBA team.

The Toronto Raptors is an expansion team. In the beginning of their journeys, the expansion teams usually do not get good drafts due to which they need to work hard to prove themselves, which was the case for the Raptors. For about three years, they struggled very hard. Then in 1998, Vince Carter became a part of the Raptors. They appeared in the playoffs for three consecutive years i.e. 2000, 2001 and 2002. Carter led the team to great victories. After he left the team Chris Bosh became the new leader and continued to keep the franchise alive.

The team is owned by Herb Simon and is spearheaded by general manager Kevin Pritchard and coach Frank Vogel.

The team that boasts the official colors of red, black, and silver, is owned by Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment and is spearheaded by coach Dwane Casey and General Manager Masai Ujiri. The D League affiliate of the Raptors is the Bakersfield Jam.

The Past Achievements:

In the early years, the Raptors had to face some difficulties, but have since made a lot of improvements and gained the required momentum to be contenders in the league. However, they have never won any championships or Conference Titles.

Achievements by the Players:

The remarkable performances by the team members made them won Conference Player of the Week, Player of the Month, Rookie of the Year, All- Star Rising Stars, All Star and many other awards and titles several times.

Division Titles:

In 2007, the Toronto Raptors won their only Division Title.

2001 Season:

In the 2001 season, the team won their first ever playoff series, with a marvelous franchise high win of 47.

The Raptors are a relatively new team and they have been going through different periods of ups and downs, but the players have the required potential and passion to vault the team to the playoffs. Once they get the right start, they will make their name and will definitely win titles and championships.

The Team Today:

At the end of the 2010 season, the team began a down period. However, after the 2012 off-season, they acquired Kyle Lowry, thus beginning the rebuilding of the team. Together with Terrence Ross and Jonas Valanciunas, the three of them led the team into a new chapter of franchise success. In the 2013 off season, several important draft picks became a part of the team; these included Tyler Hansbrough, Austin Daye and Dwight Buycks. With all these players joining the Raptors, the team has been working to make its way to the top. It appears that in the future, the Raptors will emerge as a major basketball team.

SSince 1999 the Raptors have been playing their home games at the Air Canada Center in Toronto. Before that they played their home games at the Sky Dome.
