Canadian professional ice hockey team named Vancouver Canucks is a member of Pacific Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). Vancouver was awarded with the NHL expansion team in 1970. The team was named Canucks after the name of superhero Johnny Canuck in 1950s.

History

The history of hockey in Vancouver is deep rooted. In 1945, Pacific Coast Hockey League (PCHL) introduced an ice hockey franchise in the city of Vancouver named as Canucks. The team immediately became popular by winning PCHL championships in 1946 and 1948. Professional Western Hockey League was established by merging the PHCL with Western Canada Senior Hockey League. In 1965, plans for six additional markets were expanded were announced by NHL.

The team played their first game losing to the Los Angeles Kings at the Pacific Coliseum. The team made the first win by beating the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Canucks continued struggle and did well than previous worst season. Prior to the 1974-75 season; Scallen’s group sold the team to Frank Griffiths for $9 million. The team was placed in Smythe Division and made first winning record with 38 wins, 32 loses and 10 ties. The team made to Stanley Cup Playoffs but lost the opening series in five games. The second consecutive record and playoffs in 1975-76 were made by the team.

Post season of 1982 was the golden era for the team as they made first playoff impact and continue to gaining momentum. The team made to Stanley Cup Finals and also continued its success in playoffs. The team has made its way to Stanley Cup Finals for three times since it joined NHL but failed every time.

Ownership

initially the owner of the team was Tom Scallen’s Medicor group. He was imprisoned as he was charged with fraud. In 1988-1997, the Vancouver Canucks’ ownership was in control of local businessman Arthur Griffiths. He sold majority share to an American billionaire John McCaw, Jr.. This 50% share was purchased by the Aquilini Investment Group headed by Francesco Aquilini in 2004. McCaw was given the legal right of selling the time to anyone he wished. In January 2008, the team and Roger’s Arena charge was handed to the company. The company changed its name from Ocra Bay Sports and Entertainment to Canucks Sports & Entertainment.

Achievements

Vancouver Canucks has been honored with the President’s Trophy in back to back seasons as a team with the best second record of the league in 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons. From 1974-93, the team own three division titles as a member of the Smythe Division and secured seven titles as a member of the Northwest Division from 1998-2013.
