Washington DC. based basketball team Washington Wizards was founded in 1961. The team began as the Chicago Packers in 1961 that was replaced by Chicago Zephyrs after one year. After spending several years in Baltimore as Baltimore Bullets, the team moved towards Washington in 1974 as the Washington Bullets. In the National Basketball Association (NBA) the incredible team of talented basketball players, Washington Wizards, is the part of the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference.

In the history of NBA, Chicago Zephyrs were the first modern expansion team. For decades, the performance of the team was satisfactory. The team became a solid unit in 1970s as it was built around Wes unseld with the talented rebounder as well as scorer Elvin Hayes. The team moved towards Landover, Maryland as Capital Bullets. This name could be confused with the Washington Capitals that’s why the name of the team again passed through a changing process and was named the Washington Bullets. For NBA Championship, the team defeated Seattle SuperSonics in 1977-1978. The team qualified four times for finals of NBA during 1970s. After losing NBA’s final in 1975-76 season, the head coach K.C. Jones was fired and replaced by a new head coach Dick Motta.

In 1995, the owner of the team Abe Pollin changed the name of the team. His opinion was that the word Bullet is associated with violent overtones and he related the assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin who was his long time friend. Then, a contest was held in order to finalize the name of the team. The name Wizards was finalized from some names including Seadogs, Dragons, Express, Stallions and Wizards. The team officially became Washington Wizards in 1997. The change in the name of the team brought several variations ranging from logo to the color of the team. The logo of the team was changed and blue, black and bronze took the place of traditional red, blue and white.

The name Washington Wizards, however, was not appreciated and was not warmly welcomed by the people and it gave birth to controversy. The name is the combination of two words. Washington is an African-American city while Wizard is the rank in the three movements in United States named Ku Klux Klan (KKK).
