Something Rotten

A musical comedy, Something Rotten features a book written by Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell. The musical features the catchy music and lyrics by Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick. The play was about to have a pre-Broadway tryout at the 5th Avenue Theatre, Seattle but availability of Broadway Theatre led it to Broadway debut at the St. James Theatre in 2015. The musical comedy packed with show stopping moments is helmed by the director and choreographer Casey Nicholaw of Tony award winning Aladdin and the Book of Mormon. The choreography of the show is reasonably entertaining.

What Something Rotten is about?

The musical sets for showbiz fable in1595 when the entire world was a stage for William Shakespeare and two brothers Nick and Nigel were struggling to get theatrical success. Nick and Nigel are eager to write a hit play but are caught by shadow of renaissance rock star Shakespeare. They want to compete with the fame of contemporary William Shakespeare who is a rock star in the world of theatre. Shakespeare can really do comedy, tragedy, romance, history, sonnets, epics and anything that makes him a rock god and is famous as The Bard. Nick and Nigel Bottom have to come up with the novel and unique idea that Shakespeare has not done till now. Otherwise they will lose their rich Patron.

The musical begins with the rehearsal of theatre troupe of Nick for their upcoming play Richard II. Shakespeare is preparing for Romeo and Juliet. Out of desperation, Nick and Nigel consult a local soothsayer that looks into the future and predicts about the future of theatre that is full of dance, music, acting at the same time. Armed with this foreknowledge and some love interests, Bottom brothers set out to write the world’s first musical. Who will win in this competition of theatrical world?

Would it be advisable for you to see the show?

The show is an amazing combination of high brow and low brow humor that makes it an irresistible show. This is the musical that simultaneously celebrates and sends up everything that is amalgam of peculiar art form, jazzy hands and dancing. This musical is fresh, hysterical and irreverent that reaches to the height of hilarity making everyone laughing like hell. It is an intoxicated new musical that unveils its silliness and is so engaging. This new comedy musical is too nice to be truly iconoclastic. If you have ever longed to see the Bard then you must speed to the Something Rotten that is mildly amusing and oddly anodyne new musical comedy. Every theatergoer will grin that I finally got my money’s worth. The musical with show stopping moments will leave you screaming for more.
